How Much Is Enough And How Do You Know?

Last week I had a thrilling realization while dusting my bookcase: I have enough free entertainment to last me until the end of the year.

In fact, between the subscriptions to audible and HBO go I got as wedding gifts, PBS.com, and my stack of actual books I’ve collected for pleasure reading since January, I possibly have too much free entertainment.

I’m not really sure why I feel blissfully sated by my entertainment stash. I certainly have enough clothes, but that doesn’t stop me from obsessing about how much I want a black Chanel jacket (because owning said garment I’m sure will make me a better person).

I have enough lip balm, fancy lotion, and tea to make it through the end of the year without having to spend any money to re-up my stock, but the sight of my packed shelves annoys me to no end. I will throw myself a party the day I manage to use up all the random, half-full bottles of cleaning supplies, that I keep inheriting from friends who move away, even though I’ll never use the creepy space under the bathroom sink for anything else.

I’m trying to figure out what is slaking my desire to amass more entertainment, especially since I’m typically guided by the “Why Have Just One When You Can Own The Collection” demented school of thought. Audible and HBO go take up exactly no space in my house. I love to knit as much as I love to read, but I still comb Ravelry for new patterns, even though I’m currently working on five unfinished knitting projects and have three more planned out for next month. I really, REALLY want to know what pushed the off button in my brain so I can poke it again at will.

Since everything in my life needs to be a dare, I’ve decided that I’m going to try and read all the books that are currently in my book stash by the end of the year, so I can clear out some visual noise in my bedroom and make some cash and a donation to my local libraries. Although I could have 5000 books in my house and just look like a good reader and not a good hoarder, I’d like my “Books For Pleasure Reading” pile to fit on my tiny bedside table. There’s really no reason to store books in my house when I can store them at my public library for free.

How do you know when enough is enough?
