Green Gift Guide: Free Books For A Year

The battle for shelf space is a constant one at Dinky Manor. Although I generally try and keep a grip on things by checking out library books, since my job pretty much consists of reading, good books are always finding a way into my house, and end up getting stacked up on every available horizontal surface.

So today, I went on a book purging rampage and culled thirty books from the bedroom shelf. I sold eight books to The Iliad Bookshop for $8.00, and got a somewhat better $40.00 in trade credit for seventeen books at The Brand Bookshop, which will be used to buy holiday presents for my bookworm friends. Still left with five books, I decided to check out my friend Heather’s Little Free Library that’s located in the side yard of her house.

Oh. My. God. Heather’s neighbors are good readers. Don’t let the Ethan Hawke novel scare you away. Heather’s Little Free Library was a treasure trove of great books. Let’s see…there’s some John Irving, soome Kurt Vonnegut, some Franz Kafka. FRANZ-fricking-KAFKA. Really? I had to restrain myself from coming home with a stack of new-to-me books, but ended up borrowing a copy of Kate Atkinson’s Whitbread Award-winning novel BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE MUSEUM. I just can’t help myself.

Seeing Heather’s Little Free Library up close totally makes me want to make one of my own. You know, with all my free time.

When I got back to my house I discovered that my best friend had given me a year’s subscription to Audible.com as a wedding present. How well does she know me?

Well, I know how I’ll be spending that $8.00 from the Iliad…

Love, love, love the Little Free Library! What a clever idea. I wonder if I can get away with putting one up in my neighborhood?

Once I made the decision to release books, it has been fun doing it. There are some books that will always have a place on my shelves, but there are plenty of them I will never pick up again and so I set them free. It’s a good feeling. Plus I have been using my Kindle for the past 3 years now and I hardly ever pick up a hard copy of a book.

We have a Little Free Library at CRASH Space – http://www.flickr.com/photos/crashspacela/7367462720/. We get all kinds of odd books (and cans of food, interestingly enough).
