Capsule Travel Wardrobe: What I Wore Today, 11.12.11 (and drank today at Tazzo D’Oro in Rome)

The granita is Italy’s answer to the slushy. While I love lemon and mint granite made from real fruit and herbs, for me, the gold standard for granite will always be espresso, a.k.a. granita di caffè. There has to be the perfect balance of espresso to ice, otherwise the granita just tastes like a watery iced coffee.
Tazzo D’Oro (Cup of Gold) has the best granita di caffè in all of Rome, and possibly all the world. Seriously, Starbucks and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf can suck it. Their frozen coffee drinks have nothing, NOTHING on Tazzo D’Oro’s.
Made with crushed-ice, espresso, and cane sugar, Tazzo D’Oro’s granita di caffè is served between two pillowy layers of whipping cream. If, for some hard to understand reason, you want whipping cream on only the top or bottom, ask for “solo sopra” or “solo sotto.”
