52 Letters, 52 Weeks Challenge: “Attila The Hoot” Owl Baby Hat

Letter #3 of my 52 Letters, 52 Weeks Challenge is a baby gift (included with a congratulatory note, of course) for my college roommate who lives in Atlanta.
The only childhood item that my extremely practical college roommate, Georgia Peach, brought with her to college was her stuffed owl, Attila. So when Georgia Peach gave birth in November to her first child, Mini Peach, I knew that anything I made as a gift was going to have to be strigidae-inspired.
Luckily I found a $2.75 pattern for this super cute baby hat, featuring a cable knit parliament of owls, on Ravelry.
The yarn is some Lion Brand organic cotton yarn that I’d bought, and then hated, for a honeycomb scarf for my beekeeping instructor. Luckily, it’s the perfect yarn for a baby hat. The eyes are twelve random pink or red buttons that I already had in my button collection. Since I bought enough yarn for an adult scarf, I think I’ll have enough yarn to crank out four more owl hats for future baby gifts. I’ve already made owl hat #2 and have started on owl hat #3.

The little cardboard gift box once housed a set of vintage Christmas cards that I inherited from my grandmother. It’s the perfect size to fit the owl hat. The ribbon is from my second-hand, gift wrapping stash. Wond’rous indeed.

Love this pattern, Max! What a great gift! How many hours of knitting go into one baby hat, especially when you’re using a new pattern?
Hi Ellen–This hat took me about four hours to knit from start to finish. (I am a fast knitter). Sewing the buttons on is the time consuming part of this pattern.
Okay, I want to buy one of the owl beanies. How much and how can I get one???

Do a search on ravelry for “owl hat” if this doesn’t work for you. There are about 5 pages of owl-related patterns.
Lily Chin showed us how to knit buttons in as we went along … worked great!!
Perhaps YouTube or a website has that info readily available.
This is a genius idea! I’m currently knitting a scarf with beads, so I’ll use that technique to knit in beaded eyes on my next owl project! (Knitty.com has a great tutorial about knitting with beads). I will look for Lily Chin’s instructions on how to knit buttons in. Thanks for this excellent suggestion.
